Tonnage is booked from cleared locks, the dawn weir and an optional ad. It buys nothing that changes a par, and no lock is ever sold behind it.

How a lock works

01A flight is a line of chambers. Chamber 1 sits at the bottom landing, the last chamber lies under the summit. Each holds water at a whole level.
02RAISE paddles one chamber up a unit, drawing from the summit; LOWER lets a unit off. Each haul of a paddle is one operation.
03A gate between two chambers only swings when both sides stand at the same level. Tap the gate to walk the boat through it - up or down, as it lies.
04The top gate opens only when the last chamber is full to the summit level. That is the whole point of the flight.
05A weir chamber can never be paddled past the crest (2), and its own gates only open while it sits exactly on the crest - the boat spills over at level 2.
06A stopple in a chamber seals both its leaves. Working it out with the plank button costs one operation, and it can be put back.
07Par is the shortest operation count and it is proven by search, not guessed. Three pips at par, two within two, one within four.
08Paddles are a courtesy: the spare paddle button undoes one operation for a paddle in the book. Ran out of allowance? Starting the lock over is free.
